When a market closes without saying anything

An exit scam has one observable symptom and it is not a rumour. The service stops answering, the site that used to explain the escrow policy is a parking page, and the balance inside becomes a claim nobody is left to collect.

What the word describes

A marketplace that takes deposits holds them in custody, and the whole category is one long list of operators who eventually decided to stop. The pattern is rarely dramatic. The service is reachable, then it is reachable with an error page, then the clear web mirror that fronted it expires and starts showing a domain auction placeholder, and the onion address that used to resolve starts timing out because the hidden service is not being run any more.

The clearest real sign in the Awazon case is not a forum thread. It is that the market’s own clear web name is currently parked at an auction with a placeholder where the login form was.

Why multisig helps less than it sounds

A 2 of 3 scheme with one key per side means two signatures are needed for anything to move, and that genuinely makes a quiet unilateral theft harder to carry out, because the market has to bring one of the other two parties along or convince one of them to sign. It does not remove the market from the arrangement, because it holds one of the three keys and is half of every valid pair.

There is a second limit that is easy to miss. Escrow applies to money that is inside a specific order. A wallet balance is not in an escrow script at all. It is a number in the market’s own database, and no signing scheme protects a database entry.

The part that is about your side of the screen

  • Withdraw on schedule and let the balance sit at zero between orders. This is the only control with no conditions attached.
  • Keep the recovery details for the account somewhere outside the browser you use for onion sites. After a service goes dark, the password is the last thing you will need.
  • Keep transaction ids for anything you deposited. If the service comes back under new management, a transfer id is the only document that describes your money.
  • Treat a mirror that appears with a login form and no signed announcement as a claim that has not been paid for yet.
  • Do not let a bookmark become the only thing tying you to a service. A bookmark to a retired address is indistinguishable from an outage.

What this site cannot tell you

Whether Awazon Market is in that state now. The public monitors disagree, one has not polled since late 2025 and another reports an average uptime of exactly zero, and neither of those is a measurement of the money inside the market. What a page like this can do is print three addresses that were checked on a date and admit that the date is the strongest claim it has. The rest is on the status page.

Questions

What is an exit scam in one line?

An operator stops running the service and the balances held inside it stop being redeemable.

Does 2 of 3 multisig prevent an exit?

It raises the cost and removes the quiet version, because moving funds requires a second signature. It does not prevent one, because the market still holds one of the three keys and is half of every valid pair.

Does escrow protect my wallet balance?

No. Escrow governs funds inside a specific open order. A parked balance is a record in the market’s database, which is exactly the part that outlives nothing.

What is the first thing to check when an address stops working?

Whether the address is still published at all, and whether the clear web page that used to point at it is still the market or now an auction notice. Then run the checks on the status page.
